Northwave Extreme X is a high-end SPD-compatible shoe built for fast gravel, cross-country and performance-focused off-road riding. It stands out for its very stiff sole – stated stiffness index 15 – and a roomier fit than many race-focused shoes on the market.
The white pair we tested comes with two sets of insoles, one thin and the other thicker, to fine-tune the volume inside the shoe. A carry bag is also included.
The fit offers more width and volume than some very narrow shoes. It can suit riders who feel cramped in standard models, without being a true wide fit.
Internally, the last is very flat. Riders who need pronounced arch support may need a specific insole. Cleat positioning allows a performance set-up, but the rearward adjustment range proved more limited than on some rival models.
In use, the Extreme X feel stiff, comfortable and easy to keep clean, even in white. Their main appeal lies in the balance between performance and internal volume. The limitations mainly concern arch support, the non-BOA dials being less convenient to open fully, and cleat protection when walking with a very rearward cleat position.
