Garmin refreshes its rear radar with the Varia RearVue 820, the direct successor to the widely used RTL515. The idea remains the same: warn the rider of vehicles approaching from behind via a compatible head unit or the Varia mobile app. But this new version brings several notable technical upgrades, both to detection and lighting.

The RearVue 820 packs the most powerful radar Garmin has announced to date. It detects vehicles up to 175 meters, with a coverage angle of 220° and a radar beam of 60°. This width makes it possible to identify vehicles traveling across multiple lanes, which is especially relevant on open roads or expressways.
A standout new feature: the radar can now classify vehicles (small, medium or large) and analyze their lateral position. The goal is to flag potentially riskier passes by factoring in speed, vehicle size and trajectory.
Garmin also adds a specific alert for vehicles traveling at the same speed as the rider, for example when a car sits behind waiting to pass.
The Varia RearVue 820’s rear light gets a power boost. Garmin claims visibility up to 2 km, with a day flash mode reaching up to 100 lumens. The device offers four main modes:

The RearVue 820 is compatible with ANT+ and Bluetooth, for displaying alerts on Garmin Edge bike computers, select Garmin smartwatches, or the Varia mobile app. Audio, visual and vibration alerts are available depending on the devices used.
The unit remains compact (98.9 x 25.9 x 43.2 mm) at a weight of 90 g, with IPX7 water resistance. Garmin includes a new seatpost mount, compatible with road and gravel, as well as compatibility with saddle rails via an optional adapter.
The Varia RearVue 820 brings real technical improvements over the RTL515: a wider radar, lateral tracking, vehicle classification and a brake light. Meaningful additions for safety, especially on open roads.
On the other hand, the pricing raises questions. At nearly €280, Garmin sits clearly above many well-established alternatives on the market, including its own RTL515, which is still widely available.
The refresh was expected and largely successful functionally, but the innovation-to-price ratio may hold some cyclists back.
