Only 5.9 kg: Specialized unveils the Aethos 2

Launched in 2020, the first Aethos had already turned heads with its radically different approach: forget the obsession with aerodynamics and put the focus back on pure ride feel. Specialized is back today with a second generation, the Aethos 2, presented as even more refined.

While the Tarmac remains built for World Tour athletes, the Aethos is aimed at riders who prioritize comfort, low weight, and precise handling in search of that “magical” feel on the road.

🚀 In brief:

  • Specialized’s Aethos 2 is presented as the lightest road bike frame, at 595 g for the S-Works version.

  • The model keeps an exceptionally low weight at 5.9 kg, with a design optimized for comfort and precision.

  • Starting at €6,299, the range offers different versions with the latest Roval component technologies.

  • The Aethos 2 is designed for riders who value comfort and the pure sensation of riding rather than aerodynamics.

The lightest frame on the market

With an announced 595 g in the S-Works FACT 12r version, the Aethos 2 retains its status as the lightest road frame ever sold. The complete bike drops to 5.9 kg, below the UCI limit. This figure illustrates the design work carried out by Specialized engineers thanks to the “Flow State Design” philosophy: optimizing carbon shape and layup using supercomputers and thousands of simulations.

This process not only reduces weight but also distributes loads more efficiently across the frame, improving stiffness and comfort.

Reworked geometry and ergonomics

Compared with the Aethos 1, the changes are subtle but significant:

  • Head tube angle: -0.5° compared with the Aethos 1. Tracking feels calmer at high speed, without dulling low-speed agility.

  • Stack: +15 mm. Many users of the first Aethos added spacers to raise the front.

  • Wheelbase: +7 mm and bottom bracket: -3 mm. The center of gravity drops slightly, delivering more stability in corners while keeping that very direct “road feel”.

  • Clearance: up to 35 mm. It is a real step toward versatility: high-volume road tyres, light all-road, broken-up roads – you widen the playground without weighing down the platform.

These adjustments allow the Aethos 2 to broaden its audience, combining performance and comfort over long distances.

New Roval components: cockpit and Alpinist wheels

The chassis does not tell the whole story. Specialized worked on the ecosystem around it.

The Roval Alpinist II cockpit (announced at 270 g) adopts more ovalised tops, a slight flare in the drops, and increased compliance (~28% more damping), with internal cable routing that cleans up the front end without over-stiffening it. The target feel: a bar that “moves with the road”, less fatiguing over time.

On the wheel side, the Alpinist CLX III come in around 1,131 g for the pair and move to composite spokes. The benefit is not only weight: these spokes filter inputs differently between hub and rim, yielding a crisper feel in hard cornering, better precision without a harsh, chattery ride. That is what gives it the “calm and lively” character internal testers talk about.

Together, they not only lighten the bike but also enhance the sense of smoothness and precision being sought.

Modern (and expected) details: UDH, clean integration, Rider-First

UDH (Universal Derailleur Hanger) arrives on the Aethos 2 to ensure compatibility with current and future drivetrains. Routing becomes integrated via the new cockpit, but remains compatible with a “classic” approach on certain versions. Finally, Rider-First Engineered continues: each size receives its own layup so that the behavior felt on a 49 is consistent with that perceived on a 61.

A broader range

Specialized offers the Aethos 2 in several versions:

  • S-Works Aethos 2 (FACT 12r): complete bike announced at 5.9 kg depending on build. SRAM Red AXS or Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 groupsets.

  • Aethos 2 Pro (FACT 10r): approx. 6.7 kg, SRAM Force AXS or Shimano Ultegra Di2.

  • Aethos 2 Expert (FACT 10r): approx. 7.0 kg, Ultegra Di2 with Alpinist cockpit (bar + stem) and C38 wheels.

  • Framesets: S-Works FACT 12r (595 g) and FACT 10r (705 g).

Observed prices: S-Works €13,499, Pro €8,499, Expert €6,299 (indicative public prices at launch).

Our take on this new Aethos

With the Aethos 2, Specialized does not upend its formula but refines an already cult bike. More stable, more versatile, and still incredibly light, it stands out as an outlier in a market where aerodynamics still sets the tone.

This Aethos is not for racers obsessed with watts saved at 50 km/h, but rather for riders seeking the essence of the road bike: a frame that disappears beneath the rider, serving the pure sensation of riding.

A unique positioning that makes the Aethos 2 an object of desire… but one reserved for a savvy clientele, ready to invest beyond €6,000 for an exceptional machine.
