Motion Rivalry REACH: a modular sports GPS announced on Kickstarter

The bike GPS computer market is already pretty well sewn up. Garmin, Wahoo, Hammerhead, Bryton and Coros occupy the space, each with its own ecosystem, maps, sensors and habits. So when a new player arrives promising a modular sports computer, designed for cycling but also kayaking, rowing or paragliding, it at least deserves a closer look.

That is the case with Motion Rivalry’s REACH, currently in a pre-launch phase ahead of a Kickstarter campaign slated for around September. The product is therefore not available in the usual sense: it is a 5 dollar reservation that is supposed to grant access to a preferential price during the campaign.

And that is precisely where two ideas need to be kept in mind at the same time: the concept is genuinely interesting, but the level of caution should remain high until the product has been delivered, tested and put to real-world use.

A GPS computer that wants to go beyond cycling

REACH is not presented as a simple bike GPS. Motion Rivalry calls it a modular sports computer, capable of adapting to several disciplines: cycling, rowing, kayaking, canoeing and paragliding.

For cycling, the potential appeal mainly lies in three areas: navigation, performance data and the ability to expand the head unit with external modules. The product claims a 3.5-inch color screen, 26-hour battery life, an IPX7 rating, a weight of 156 g and a 10 Hz GPS compatible with GPS, BeiDou and GLONASS.

The 10 Hz GPS is one of the headline claims. In theory, a higher sampling rate enables a finer track, notably in rapid direction changes, twisty descents or environments where the trajectory shifts a lot. On a bike, the benefit will hinge on the real quality of the antenna, the software processing and signal stability. An advertised frequency alone does not make a good GPS.

The big idea: modularity

The most original aspect of REACH remains its modular architecture. Motion Rivalry mentions several modules that can add specific functions: action camera, walkie-talkie, anemometer, humidity/temperature sensor, radar and even open interfaces via serial port and USB power.

In the cycling world, this approach is quite rare. Current GPS computers mostly evolve through software or via external ANT+ / Bluetooth sensors. Here, the idea is to make the computer an extensible hardware base, almost like a platform.

The central question remains: will this modularity be simple, reliable, well integrated and truly useful on the bike? On a ride, a computer must first remain readable, stay put on its mount, offer solid battery life, feel responsive and be able to guide without bugs. Modularity should not become an extra layer of complexity.

Very ambitious data promises

Motion Rivalry announces a fairly complete suite of sensors: accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer, barometer, ambient light sensor, GPS, with a 9-axis IMU at 200 Hz and a barometer claimed to have 0.1 m resolution.

The brand also talks about advanced metrics, biomechanical processing and even data such as cadence or power without an external sensor. That is the kind of promise that should be treated with great caution. Estimating cadence from motion can make sense in certain scenarios. Estimating power reliably without a dedicated sensor is a different story.

Connected cycling is already a highly competitive space, with well-established ecosystems and platforms that shape a large part of digital sports use. To stand out, REACH will have to do more than offer a dense spec sheet: it will need a smooth, compatible and credible experience.

Stated price, deposit, and timeline: what to know

The announced commercial approach is a pre-launch. Motion Rivalry offers a $5 reservation, presented as refundable, allowing access to a VIP price during the Kickstarter campaign.

The amounts communicated vary depending on the page: the recommended retail price is stated at $599, with an Early Bird at $359 and a VIP price mentioned at $334 on one page, while another cites a VIP price at $359.

Priority delivery is currently estimated for December 2026. Again, that is an estimate. Kickstarter campaigns can run late, change their final specifications or hit industrial limits between prototype, production and after-sales support.

The key point is simple: a Kickstarter reservation is not a standard purchase. Even when the deposit is presented as refundable, you need to read the terms, check how the campaign actually works and accept a degree of uncertainty.

Our view

At this stage, REACH is a promise more than a proven product. And that promise is interesting because it does not just copy the traditional bike GPS computer. Modularity, if well executed, can open up new uses, especially for cyclists who practice multiple sports or want to reduce the number of devices they carry.

But caution is essential. Between the stated figures, the planned modules, the companion app, the sports data algorithms, the AI-generated photos and the delivery timeline, Motion Rivalry is setting the bar very high. The risk is not only that the product will be delayed. The real issue will be whether the final experience stands up to the already established benchmarks.

If REACH delivers on its promises, it could bring an original approach to the sports GPS. If execution falters, it will remain one more nice spec sheet in the complicated history of hardware crowdfunding.
