A design for optimal performance

The Zipp 303 XPLR wheelset stands out with an innovative design featuring a 54 mm-deep hookless rim, 40 mm external width, and 32 mm internal width. Those dimensions have been carefully engineered to deliver seamless integration with gravel tyres, especially those 40 mm and wider.

According to David Morse, an engineer and category manager at Zipp, the top-tier 303 XPLR SW is “the fastest gravel wheel Zipp has ever designed, thanks to its ultra-wide, deep rim that integrates perfectly with gravel tyres“. Zipp says rigorous testing shows these wheels outperform competitors across a broad range of tyre sizes, from 38 to 50 mm.

Technical innovations for better performance

The 303 XPLR SW is distinguished by Zipp’s signature dimpled rim finish. This feature isn’t just aesthetic: it trips turbulent airflow earlier as it moves over the surface, improving aerodynamic performance. The wheels are built with Sapim CX-Ray spokes and Zipp’s ZR1 hub with six pawls, delivering a quick 5.45 degrees of engagement.

For budget-conscious riders, the 303 XPLR S uses a simpler rim construction and more economical hubs, while keeping the same dimensions as the flagship. Here is a comparison table of the two models:

A solution to gravel’s challenges

Zipp has identified four major issues in current gravel wheel and tyre design:

1. Aerodynamics compromised by poorly matched rim and tyre widths
2. Bike control affected by unsuitable tyre pressures on narrow rims
3. Tyre reliability compromised by current rim designs
4. Speed loss due to vibrations

The 303 XPLR brings targeted solutions to each of these problems. For example, the extra width provides better tyre stability, reducing the risk of pinch flats and improving cornering grip. In addition, the ability to run lower tyre pressures without sacrificing performance helps cut vibration and increase comfort.

Custom tyres for optimal performance

To complement this new wheel range, Zipp partnered with Goodyear to develop dedicated XPLR tyres. Two models are offered: the XPLR Slick for dry conditions and the XPLR Inter for mixed terrain. These tyres are designed to match the 303 XPLR rims precisely, measuring 40 mm for the Slick and 45 mm for the Inter.

Both models use Goodyear’s Dynamic:UHP compound, said to improve grip while reducing rolling resistance. They also feature a “double angle” bead technology for secure retention on the 303 XPLR’s hookless rims.
