Over the past few months, they have popped up everywhere. On start lines, in business podcasts, in filmed morning routines to camera. A discreet strip on the nose, supposed to improve breathing, sleep, focus.
The object is simple. The symbolism, much less so.
As so often in the worlds of sport and entrepreneurship, what starts as a technical optimization ends up becoming a cultural marker.
And that might be where it gets interesting.

The manufacturing cost is likely close to that of a simple reinforced adhesive. The perceived value, meanwhile, rests on the optimization narrative and the social effect.
We are not looking at complex technology. We are looking at a simple, high-margin product, carried by a powerful narrative.
It is a classic contemporary DTC business model: low unit cost, aggressive marketing, social virality.
The placebo effect as a catalyst
That does not mean the product is useless.
Placebo in sport is not an illusion. It genuinely influences the perception of effort, relaxation, stress management.
If wearing a strip makes you feel you breathe better, you may unconsciously adjust your posture, slow your breathing, reduce facial tension.
The benefit may not be physiological in the strict sense, but it can be behavioral.
And in a competitive environment, behavior matters.
The hard part is admitting the benefit may come more from belief than from mechanics.
The risk of shifting attention
The real issue is not the strip. It is what it replaces.
Train diaphragmatic breathing.
Improve thoracic mobility.
Build CO₂ tolerance.
Manage chronic stress.
These levers are more powerful. But they are less visible. They take time. They do not photograph well.
