Gravel or MTB? Trek shakes things up with the new CheckOut SL

Trek has just unveiled a bike that will get people talking: the CheckOut SL, a full-suspension gravel rig blending comfort, control and capability on rougher terrain. Spotted on the Dutch version of Trek’s official site, it stakes out hybrid territory between gravel and a lightweight MTB.

With 55 mm of rear travel (via a RockShox SIDluxe IsoStrut) and a 60 mm RockShox Rudy XL fork, the CheckOut sits well apart from the Trek Checkpoint.

A frame designed for serious adventure

The OCLV Carbon 500 Series frame features:

a more stable, more upright geometry for long rides,
clearance for tyres up to 56 mm (29×2.2 in),
an integrated rear rack that works with the suspension kinematics,
no fewer than 15 mounting points for bags and bottles.

The stated weight limit is 125 kg (bike + rider + luggage), which confirms its orientation towards serious bikepacking.

Drivetrain and components

The build centres on the latest SRAM Force AXS E1 run 1×12, paired with a 38 t chainring and a 10-52 cassette. Out back is an SRAM X0 Eagle AXS T-Type rear derailleur – very much from the MTB side of the family.

As for the wheelset, it’s Bontrager Aeolus Pro 3V carbon, shod with 50 mm tubeless-ready Bontrager Betasso RSL GX tyres.

The cockpit gets the new GR CheckOut bar, offering multiple positions: narrower up top for aero, wider in the drops for technical control.

Note that a less expensive version with Shimano GRX and Bontrager Paradigm Comp 25 aluminium wheels is also available.

An exclusive frame bag is also offered as a separate accessory.

Key equipment: suspension and dropper

The bike ships with a RockShox Reverb AXS dropper post (100 mm travel) as standard, underlining its singletrack ambitions.

The claimed weight in size ML is 12.04 kg (with tubeless sealant, without inner tubes).

The science behind suspension in gravel

According to Trek, the CheckOut delivers measurable reductions in fatigue and energy expenditure compared with a rigid gravel bike:

7.3% less oxygen consumption,
41.5% of vibrations absorbed,
23% fewer steering corrections.

These figures, from internal testing, support the case for suspension in gravel – while also blurring the line with MTB.

Our take on the Trek CheckOut

With the CheckOut SL 7, Trek pushes a trend already set by other brands (BMC URS LT, Cannondale Topstone Lefty) even further. Until now, many builds edged close to a hardtail MTB with a dropbar.

But this bike opens a new path: full-suspension gravel capable of soaking up marathon-style MTB routes, while retaining a dropbar and bikepacking compatibility. It remains to be seen how the gravel community, traditionally attached to simplicity, will welcome a bike tipping the scales at over 12 kg with a relatively high price.
