Argon 18 has just unveiled its new Anti Matter, a gravel race bike we’d already spotted a few days ago at The Traka. The name is new, but the idea is pretty clear: deliver a faster, more integrated, more competition-focused take than the Dark Matter, while drawing on some of the aerodynamic work from the Nitrogen Pro, the Canadian brand’s performance road bike.

The product page is still fairly brief, so some caution is needed. But on paper, this Anti Matter already ticks many of the boxes found on the most recent gravel race bikes, starting with the BMC Kaius: advanced integration, a one-piece cockpit, refined aerodynamics, generous tyre clearance, and a “system” approach around the frame, the rider, and the accessories.
Argon 18 presents the Anti Matter as a race-focused gravel bike, not as a do-it-all, versatile gravel bike. The distinction matters. The goal here is not to multiply mounts, load up bikepacking bags, or promise a comfortable machine for every use.
The bike instead targets fast events, competitive long distances, and modern courses where average speeds are climbing, but the terrain still calls for proper tyres.
The brand claims over 800 hours of CFD simulation and 45 hours of wind tunnel testing. The stated result: a 14.5-watt gain versus the Dark Matter, measured at 45 km/h with an average wind angle of ±15°. As always with this kind of figure, we will have to wait for independent testing to put it in context. But it at least confirms one thing: Argon 18 is not presenting this bike as just a modernised gravel frame. Aero is part of the core brief.
One of the most interesting points of this Anti Matter is its stated 55 mm tyre clearance. On a gravel race bike, this has become a key metric.
For a long time, performance-oriented gravel bikes were limited to narrower sections, often around 40 to 45 mm. But current races show a clear trend: wider tyres let you ride faster on rough terrain, maintain grip, reduce fatigue, and sometimes even improve real-world efficiency despite the larger casing.
With 55 mm, Argon 18 positions itself at the top end. This choice leaves room to adapt the build to the terrain: fast 40/45 mm tyres for rolling courses, wider rubber for rougher terrain, or long events where comfort becomes a performance factor.
Argon 18 talks about a “system” approach. In practical terms, that means the frame, cockpit, bottle cages, rider position, and luggage were designed together.
The one-piece ATTEN CHB-01 cockpit is part of this logic. The bottle cages are also integrated into the frame design, with a cage on the down tube designed to remain accessible even with a frame bag in place.
The real standout comes from the ATTEN x Apidura bags, developed specifically for the bike. The idea is interesting: instead of adding a standard bag that breaks up the lines and potentially disturbs airflow, Argon 18 offers a solution conceived from the outset with the frame.
That is exactly the kind of detail that makes sense in gravel racing. On long events, you need to carry nutrition, tools, sometimes a jacket or repair gear. If this storage capacity can be integrated cleanly, it is a real plus.
Only regret: we would have liked to see an integrated hatch in the down tube. Several competitors have already adopted it, and the benefit is real in gravel: a tube, tyre plugs, a cartridge, a mini-tool, or a repair kit can stay in the bike permanently, without relying on a bag.
Argon 18 has also made some reassuring choices regarding standards. The bike uses a T47 threaded bottom bracket, a UDH hanger, a CeramicSpeed SLT headset, and a 1-1/8 in round steerer.
This last point is worth noting. At a time when some highly integrated bikes use proprietary solutions, Argon 18 keeps a more standard base here. That can make maintenance easier, and also opens the door to a potential gravel suspension fork.
The bike is therefore not seeking integration for integration’s sake. It keeps a measure of mechanical pragmatism, which is never trivial for a bike meant to be ridden hard, for a long time, and sometimes in poor conditions.
With the Anti Matter, Argon 18 arrives with a coherent proposition. The bike is clearly positioned against the benchmarks of modern gravel racing.
What we like is the apparent balance between performance and real-world use. The 55 mm clearance is not just there to decorate a spec sheet. In today’s gravel races, it is a genuine advantage. The integration of the bags with Apidura is also relevant, because it meets a concrete need of long-distance riders.
We still need to see how the bike performs in the field: stiffness, comfort, behaviour when loaded, ease of maintenance, and true versatility across different builds. For now, the main takeaway is that Argon 18 did not just make a more aggressive Dark Matter. The Anti Matter looks like a true next-generation gravel race bike.
It is just a pity that internal storage is not included. At this level, it is the small detail that keeps the package from being completely perfect.
